Ikko Tanaka, 71; Leading Graphic Designer in Japan

Ikko Tanaka, 71, Japan’s leading graphic designer, passed on Jan. 11 in Tokyo of a stroke.Born in 1930 in the nation’s historical capital of Nara in western Japan, Tanaka studied art as a child. They later lived throughout Kyoto, where he had been active in modern day drama and theatre.He established a new design studio in Tokyo in 1969 and became known for his / her unique "Ikko style" by mixing Japanese-style art into Traditional western graphics.He earned the silver reward in the 1968 Warsaw international poster competition, and gained a New York Fine art Directors Club gold prize.Tanaka’s better-known works consist of posters for Italian shoemaker Salvatore Ferragamo’s 1998 Tokyo display and graphic patterns for Japanese retail store giant Mujirushi.The book "Ikko Tanaka, Image Master," authored by Phaidon Press in ’97, is an overview of their work.Related themes wordspress:
